چکیده

Synthesizing and exploring large-scale realistic urban road networks is beneficial to 3D content creation, traffic animation, and urban planning. In this paper, we present an interactive tool that allows untrained users to design roads with complex realistic details and styles. Roads are generated by growing a geometric graph. During a sketching phase, the user specifies the target area and the examples. During a growing phase, two types of growth are effectively applied to generate roads in the target area; example-based growth uses patches extracted from the source example to generate roads that preserve some interesting structures in the example road networks; procedural-based growth uses the statistical information of the source example while effectively adapting the roads to the underlying terrain and the already generated roads. User-specified warping, blending, and interpolation operations are used at will to produce new road network designs that are inspired by the examples. Finally, our method computes city blocks, individual parcels, and plausible building and tree geometries. We have used our approach to create road networks covering up to 200 km and containing over 3,500 km of roads.

Procedural Modeling as an Analytical Tool for 3D Survey in Urban Design Assessment

This paper examines procedural modeling as a tool for 3D modeling creation. Procedural modeling historically has been used for 3D visualization of natural features, but with the release of the software CityEngine in 2008, the technology can easily be adopted also in problem domains dealing with urban environments. Then, we will examine and compare two types of modeling, traditional and proc...

A state of the art of urban reconstruction: street, street network, vegetation, urban feature

World population is raising, especially the part of people living in cities. With increased population and complex roles regarding their inhabitants and their surroundings, cities concentrate difficulties for design, planning and analysis. These tasks require a way to reconstruct/model a city. Traditionally, much attention has been given to buildings reconstruction, yet an essential part of cit...

Procedural modeling of urban green space pattern designs taking into account ecological parameters

Cities all over the world are challenged by increasing the quality of life of urban citizens in order to ensure sustainable urban development. However, a lot of policies and planning fail in integrating environmental aspects in a way that makes them applicable for design leading to rather unsustainable developments. This paper presents an approach to integrate ecological parameters into urban d...

Designing large-scale interactive traffic animations for urban modeling

Designing and optimizing traffic behavior and animation is a challenging problem of interest to virtual environment content generation and to urban planning and design. While some traffic simulation methods have appeared in computer graphics, most related systems focus on the design of buildings, roads, or cities but without explicitly considering urban traffic. To our knowledge, our work provi...

Private-Public Partnership for low volume roads: the Swedish Private Roads Associations

Private road associations (PRAs) manage two thirds of the road network in Sweden. They manage the roads at less cost and with better results than the Government road agencies. In fact, the PRAs perform so well that some urban municipalities request the associations to manage the municipal roads which connect to the private roads. There are also PRAs that are responsible for ferry services, for ...
